Summer's End

So happy, on a summer's day,
to hang the laundry out to dry,
to watch the t-shirts
swaying in the breeze
while sailboats scurry by...
too short, these days now:
time and children
fly before the wind,
off on new adventures,
trailing laundry as they go.
The house staggers
with the spin cycle;
tacks, then rights itself again
while seagulls watch
loudly mourning from the rooftop
as the wheels spin out of the driveway,
rushing for a ferry.
