However beautiful
this colonnade may be,
at the end
(I've cut it from the picture)
there is a statue of a bishop,
shaking his finger
in admonition,
and so I find I cannot see
the lovely patterns in the floor,
the magnificence of the wide arches;
it doesn't speak to me
of the power of God,
but rather of the brokenness
of all the edifices --
both physical and spiritual --
that man has built
to house the Infinite Divine.
